The night air inside the Metrodome carried history on September 16, 1993. Dave Winfield stood one swing from immortality.
The Minnesota Twins hosted the Oakland Athletics before a modest Minneapolis crowd. Winfield, 41, chased 3,000 hits on his home field. He entered the ninth inning with 2,999 hits and his team trailing 2-0.
Oakland closer Dennis Eckersley took the mound with a 2-0 lead. Kirby Puckett tripled to ignite hope. One out later, Winfield stepped in as the tying run.
Eckersley fired. Winfield answered with a ground ball through the left side. The ball skipped past the infield and into history. Puckett scored, and the Metrodome erupted. Winfield removed his helmet and smiled as the crowd rose. The scoreboard flashed “3,000,” and teammates celebrated the milestone.
Three batters later Scott Stahoviak singled home Big Dave to force extra innings. Minnesota won the game in the 13th.
The night belonged to the Twins and Winfield. He became the 19th player in major league history to reach 3,000 hits. In a career defined by consistency and power, Winfield had his memorable night.
Great player.
Best all-around athlete to come out of the state of Minnesota! A product of Oxford playground Saint Paul
Winfield has a main instigator in one of college basketball’s ugliest incidents, when Minnesota players and fans brutally assaulted the Ohio St players. He was never contrite about it and I have no respect for him. He should have gone to jail.
