Meanwhile, Hershiser delivered one of the most memorable pitching seasons in history. The Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander won 23 games to lead the National League. He also completed 15 games and threw 8 shutouts, displaying endurance rarely seen in modern baseball. Hershiser’s control, composure, and fierce competitiveness set him apart all season.
In the season’s final weeks, he made history by pitching 59 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking Don Drysdale’s record. That stretch helped push the Dodgers into the postseason, where Hershiser remained unstoppable. He earned the World Series MVP Award, just as Viola had the year before. Both pitchers anchored their rotations and stood as the best in their leagues.
Viola used precision. Hershiser leaned on toughness. Each dominated in his own way. Voters rewarded their brilliance with baseball’s top pitching honor.
Shown here is the 1988 Sports Illustrated “Sportsman of the Year” issue. Hershiser graces on the cover and neatly signed his name on the white portion of the cover.
